Princes’ Islands Full Day Tour: Büyükada Boat Trip & Lunch

Loading available options...

Overview

  • Duration:8 hours 0 minutes
  • Tour Type:Daily Tour, Regular Tour
  • Language:Arabic, English, Turkish
Some days in Istanbul you just want silence, sea air and no car horns. This is that day. In the morning you’re picked up from your hotel and driven to the pier, where your boat waits among ferries and fishing boats. As soon as you leave the city behind and feel the breeze on your face, the chaos of Istanbul starts to shrink on the horizon.

The cruise across the Sea of Marmara is already part of the experience. You pass the city skyline of domes and towers, then the Asian shore with its apartment blocks and marinas, and finally the green shapes of the Princes’ Islands appear ahead. On deck you hear seagulls calling and smell the mix of sea salt and grilled köfte drifting from the snack bar.

Your first stop is a smaller island such as Kınalıada or Heybeliada. Here you have free time to lunch. Served while the boat sails on toward Büyükada, the largest of the Princes’ Islands. You eat with the islands sliding past outside the windows: meze-style starters, a simple grilled main course and salad. It’s relaxed, informal and very Turkish – nobody is in a hurry here.

On Büyükada you have more time to explore at your own pace. You can rent a bicycle, join an optional short tour by electric car, or simply wander the shady streets under pine trees, stopping for ice cream or tea in a seaside café. In the late afternoon the boat turns back toward Istanbul, and you watch the city slowly grow larger again as the sun begins to drop behind the hills. At the pier your bus is waiting to take you back to your hotel, pleasantly tired and sun-kissed.

Itinerary

Hotel Pickup & Transfer to Ferry Station

Time: 07:30 – 08:30
Location: Your hotel lobby (central European Side)

Your day starts with pickup from your hotel or a nearby meeting point. A shared coach collects guests from different areas and drives to the departure Ferry station. On the way, your guide introduces the day’s plan and answers any questions about the islands, weather and optional activities.

Stop 1: Depart Istanbul – Cruise to the Princes’ Islands

Time: 09:15 – 11:00
Location: Ferry Station → Büyükada

You board the tour boat and find a seat inside or on the open deck. As the boat pulls away, you get postcard views of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, Galata Tower and the Asian shoreline. The ride to the islands takes about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on sea conditions and the route. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase at the bar.

Stop 2: Lunch on Board

Time: 11:00 – 12:30
Location: On the boat, sailing between the islands

Back on the boat, a Turkish set lunch is served while you cruise toward Büyükada. Expect simple but tasty dishes: cold meze starters, a grilled fish or meat main course (with a vegetarian alternative if you requested in advance), salad and bread. You eat while watching the islands slide by outside, with sea breeze coming through the open windows or from the upper deck.

Stop 3: Büyükada – Free Time

Time: 12:30 – 15:30
Location: Büyükada, the largest of the Princes’ Islands

Arriving at Büyükada, you feel the change immediately: no car noise, only bicycles, electric shuttles and the sound of waves. Your guide explains the meeting point and time, then you have free hours to enjoy the island.

You can:

  • rent a bicycle and ride along the coastline,
  • join an optional short electric car tour to see the historic wooden mansions and viewpoints,
  • hike or walk up into the pine forests,
  • or simply sit in a café with Turkish tea and watch the sea.

There are small beaches and swimming platforms; if the weather is warm, bring a towel and swimwear in case you’d like to take a dip.

Stop 5: Return Cruise to Istanbul

Time: 15:30 – 17:30
Location: Sea of Marmara → Istanbul pier

In the late afternoon you re-board the boat for the cruise back to Istanbul. Most people are pleasantly quiet now – sun-tired, full and relaxed. You watch the islands fade into the distance and the city skyline grow in front of you.

Frequently asked questions

Is swimming possible during the tour?

No. Its not swimming tour.

Are there cars on the islands?

Private cars are not allowed on the Princes’ Islands. Transport is by walking, bicycle and electric shuttles or small electric cars. This makes the islands much quieter than the city, but also means you should wear comfortable shoes for walking.

Is lunch included? What about drinks?

A set lunch is included in the tour price, usually served on the boat between islands. Drinks are not included and can be bought from the onboard bar or in cafés on the islands. You can also bring your own bottle of water if you prefer.

How busy do the islands get?

On weekends and public holidays, many Istanbul locals escape to the islands, so ferries and streets can be crowded. Weekdays are generally calmer. If you prefer a quieter experience, we recommend booking on a weekday when possible.
