Overview

This is the day where Istanbul finally makes sense on the map. Your private guide and driver collect you from your hotel and within minutes you’re driving along the Bosphorus, watching ferries glide between Europe and Asia. No group bus, no loudspeaker – just your own guide, adjusting the rhythm of the day to you.

You start among the colours and aromas of the Spice Bazaar, where stalls overflow with saffron, dried fruits and pyramids of Turkish delight. The noise of bargaining mixes with the sound of the tram bells and the call to prayer from the nearby New Mosque. It’s busy and alive, but with a private guide you never feel lost in the crowd.

Then you step on board a Bosphorus cruise boat and watch the city open up like a film. Palaces, Ottoman waterfront mansions and wooden yalıs slide by as you pass under giant bridges connecting two continents. You feel the cool wind on your face, smell the salty water and see seagulls chasing the wake of the boat while your guide quietly points out the landmarks on both shores.

Back on land, the focus turns to pure Ottoman elegance at Dolmabahçe Palace, the 19th-century residence of the sultans. Crystal chandeliers, gold leaf, polished parquet floors and a grand ceremonial hall opening directly to the water – it’s a completely different world from the old Topkapi Palace. With a private guide, you hear the stories behind the rooms instead of just walking through them.

In the afternoon, you cross the Bosphorus Bridge to the Asian side and climb up to Çamlıca Hill for one of Istanbul’s best panoramas. From here you can see almost the entire Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the city skyline dotted with domes and minarets. Locals sip tea in traditional tulip-shaped glasses, families take selfies with the view behind them, and you get a quiet moment above the noise of the city before your driver brings you back to your hotel.

Itinerary

Itinerary: Pickup & Bosphorus Drive

Time: 08:00 – 09:00
Location: Your hotel lobby (central European Side)

Your private guide and driver meet you at your hotel and you set off along the Bosphorus coastline toward Eminönü. As you drive, your guide gives a quick orientation of the city – where the Old City, Galata, Bosphorus and Asian side sit in relation to each other – so when you’re later on the boat, everything feels familiar.

Stop 1: Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Market)

Time: 09:00 – 10:00
Location: Spice Bazaar, Eminönü

Start the day with a hit of colour and aroma in the Spice Bazaar, one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric covered markets. Browse stalls selling saffron, sumac, dried apricots, nuts, cheeses and coffee. Your guide helps you avoid common tourist traps, explains how locals shop here, and shows you how to tell good quality spices from the rest.

  • Note: The Spice Bazaar is generally open every day from around 09:00 to 19:00, but may close on the first days of major religious holidays.

Stop 2: Bosphorus Cruise

Time: 10:15 – 12:00
Location: Bosphorus cruise pier (Eminönü or Kabataş – depending on departure)

You board a shared Bosphorus cruise boat for a scenic ride between Europe and Asia. From the open deck you’ll pass Galata Tower, Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace, Bosphorus Bridge, Ottoman yali mansions and medieval Rumeli Fortress. Your guide points out landmarks and stories, but also gives you time simply to enjoy the view and take photos. Tea and simple snacks are usually available for purchase on board.

Stop 3: Lunch Break

Time: 12:15 – 13:15
Location: Local restaurant by the Bosphorus or in Beşiktaş/Kabataş area

After the cruise, you have a flexible lunch break. Your guide suggests a few local places – perhaps a fish restaurant by the water, a lokanta serving home-style dishes, or a simple döner place if you prefer something quick. Because lunch is not included, you’re free to choose what and where you eat according to your taste and budget.

Stop 4: Dolmabahçe Palace

Time: 13:30 – 15:00
Location: Dolmabahçe Palace

Next, you walk or drive the short distance to Dolmabahçe Palace, the 19th-century waterfront residence that replaced Topkapi as the main royal palace. Inside you’ll see glittering chandeliers, grand staircases and richly decorated reception halls overlooking the Bosphorus. Your guide will help with buying entrance tickets on-site and lead you through the key sections so you make the most of your visit without rushing.

  • Note: Dolmabahçe Palace is closed on Mondays and on certain public holidays. On those days we replace this visit with alternative sights along the Bosphorus or extended time on the cruise and Asian side.

Stop 5: Cross the Bosphorus Bridge to Asia

Time: 15:00 – 15:30
Location: Bosphorus Bridge

You then drive across the Bosphorus Bridge, officially leaving Europe and entering Asia. As the car climbs, you get great views of the strait, the city’s skyline and the ships moving below. Your guide will point out some of the neighborhoods you can see on both sides and share how daily life differs between continents.

Stop 6: Çamlıca Hill Viewpoint

Time: 15:30 – 16:30
Location: Çamlıca Hill, Asian Side

At the top of Çamlıca Hill, one of Istanbul’s highest natural viewpoints, you step out into a large park filled with pine trees, flowerbeds and tea gardens. From here you look down over the southern Bosphorus, the mouth of the Golden Horn and a skyline filled with domes, towers and bridges. This is a favourite spot for locals to drink tea, take photos and enjoy the breeze. If you like, you can also see the exterior of the impressive new Çamlıca Mosque.

Drop-off

Time: 16:30 – 17:30
Location: Your hotel / agreed central drop-off point

After your time on Çamlıca Hill, you drive back across the bridge and return to your hotel or a central drop-off point such as Taksim. Your guide can suggest evening plans – maybe a rooftop restaurant, a night-time Bosphorus dinner cruise, or a simple walk along the Galata Bridge to watch the city lights.

Frequently asked questions

Are entrance fees included in the price?

No. To keep the tour flexible and fair (because museum prices change frequently), entrance tickets for Topkapi Palace, the Harem and the paid visitor section of Hagia Sophia are paid on the day directly by you. Your guide will handle the logistics and use any available fast-track queues so you don’t waste time.

Is this tour suitable for people with limited mobility?

Most of the Old City is walkable but includes cobblestones, slopes and some stairs, especially inside Topkapi Palace and the Harem. If you have limited mobility, we slow the pace, use the vehicle more, and can skip sections with many stairs. Please tell us your situation when booking so we can advise honestly and plan the route.

What should I wear to visit the mosques?

For the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, modest dress is required: shoulders and knees covered, and women are asked to cover their hair with a scarf. If you don’t have one, simple scarves are sold or sometimes provided at the entrance. Shoes are removed in mosque interiors and carried in a plastic bag; socks are recommended.

What happens if a site is closed on my date?

Tuesdays: Topkapi Palace is closed – we replace it with alternatives such as the Basilica Cistern, Suleymaniye Mosque, or extra time exploring other parts of the Old City.
Sundays: Grand Bazaar is closed – we visit the Spice Bazaar and surrounding markets instead.
Your guide will always adapt the itinerary so you still enjoy a full, meaningful day.

Do you pick up from the Asian side?

Our standard pickup is for European side hotels (Sultanahmet, Taksim, Beyoglu). If you are staying on the Asian side or Airbnb, we will ask you to meet us at a central meeting point like The Marmara Taksim Hotel.
